My name is Richard Sebastian. I am an Instructional Technology Specialist in Richmond, Virginia. I currently work in the field of adult basic education where I have developed and currently manage several statewide technology integration initiatives.
I’ve worked in adult education for over ten years, as an instructor, curriculum developer, and trainer. I am also interested in game-based learning, alternate reality games, augmented reality games, virtual worlds, and other innovative uses of technology. I like it when people find ways to use these tools in new and unexpected ways.
I guess I am supposed to know something about this stuff because I received a doctorate in Instructional Technology from the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education. I have to admit, though, the more I work in this field, the less I think I know. I guess that is natural in such a new and fast-moving field. In the past I have instructed inmates at a local jail, made burritos, taught software courses, washed dishes, and worked as a piemaker, kennel cleaner, filmmaker, and disc jockey. Not in that order. See my CV for a list of my more recent professional endeavors. In addition to work stuff, I also run, make short films, and play in the concept cover band the Miserable Space Cowboys. Right now I am currently working to build a community dog park in my neighborhood, as well as creating a local pet information web portal called The Richmond Daily Beast. Check out my blog here for updates about these projects and the other stuff I’m up to.
